Is a piece of art’s beauty heightened by its impermanence? Ponder this and other big questions as you take in the displays at the annual ice art festival in Fairbanks, Alaska – or simply delight in all the very many, pretty, pretty, shiny things. Dubbed the “World Ice Art Championships,” it’s one of the more prominent and visitor friendly of the ice sculpting events that have sprung up across the globe, attracting an international slate of artists from Russia, China, Canada, and Europe.
Typically held in the last week of February and the first week of March, spectators may view the sculptors at work during the championship competitions (which are divided into single and multi-block events). The results remain on display to the public for a further fortnight until nature takes its course. Wrap up warm and revel in the harmonising of art and nature. Or something.
In 2009 the event runs between February 24th and March 22nd.
