For a taste of the real Jamaica, a part of the island unspoiled by the clamours of tourism and the hustle and bustle of larger towns like Kingston, why not take a trip to Alligator Pond, a fishing village on the island’s south-west coast? Life here centres on the beach, which is hidden away at the foot of a valley and overlooks the bay from in front of a series of sand dunes. The best place to take in the daily comings and goings of the fishing industry – the men catch them, the women sell them – is from one of the bars on the beach’s edge, where curried goat can be washed down by the local Red Stripe beer. And for an even more authentic taste, there is fresh lobster and fish to be discovered in the shacks off the town square. But it’s not all about absorbing the local culture. A quick look out to sea will reveal the Sandy Cays, which are the ideal spot for some scuba diving, snorkelling or – if you’re feeling especially adventurous – nude bathing. Overall, though, Alligator Pond is a chance to escape the beaten track and slow down. Blissful.
