One would not usually associate a yacht race called the America's Cup with the Spanish port of Valencia, but between June 23rd and July 7th 2007 the beautiful Mediterranean town will become the first European city to host the race in 150 years. Whether a European team can hold on to the title remains to be seen but current holders Alinghi from Switzerland will take on the winners of the two-year long Louis Vuitton Cup for the right to challenge them. Widely acknowledged as the greatest yacht race on earth, the contest is named after a yacht America, the lone American entry, beat 16 of the finest English boats in the Hundred Guineas Cup back in 1851. It proved to be an apt title: until an Australian team won the race in 1983, US teams had total domination of the event. Now things could be changing. Make your way to Valencia to see if Alinghi can hold on.
