They’ve not won the FIFA World Cup since 1986, but Argentina’s polo players are the best in the world, and the annual Argentine Open Polo Tournament held in the upscale Palermo district of Buenos Aires is the most prestigious polo tournament of all. Known locally as the Campeonato Argentino de Polo, and first played over 100 years ago, it’s the Wimbledon of the sport - as famous for the quality of the games and its star players - it attracts the best club teams from Argentina, England, Australia, Pakistan and the US - but also for being a heady social gathering where crowds of landed gentry from around the world come to sip champagne, eat canapes and talk country estates in posh accents. Watching the people can in fact be as entertaining as the games. The 2006 tournament takes place between 12 November and 11th December, games starting at 4.30pm.
