There’s something about Cornwall that makes it haven for people of an artistic bent, maybe it’s the sea air, the mild climate, or perhaps it's the very-English-and-yet-not feel of the place. The charming coastal town of St Ives has a particularly arty air, housing not only its own outpost of the Tate but the fascinating Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Hepworth, arguably one pf the most important British artists of the 20th century, lived and worked in these studios from 1949 until her death in 1975, and created many of her most famous works there. The museum provides an amazing insight into her life and many of her sculptures in bronze, stone and wood are on display in the adjoining subtropical garden. The museum also holds a hefty collection of Hepworth’s paintings and drawings, making it an essential place to visit for anyone with an interest in her work.
