Just check out the round-the-block lines at Ess-A-Bagel in Gramercy Park or the early morning customers at H&H Bagels on Broadway and you'll see that many go the extra mile for that perfect chewy nosh.
The purists might opt for plain or poppy seed, with a generous smear (pronounced schmeer!) of cream cheese, maybe with some lox (salmon) or white fish. Just never ask for toasted, buddy! But for the more adventurous, pumpkin and blueberry bagels fill the city's mesh baskets with an equally colourful assortment of toppings. But don't be fooled by imitations. Real bagels are boiled which gives them their distinctive chew. If you get one that tastes like a bread roll - fuhgeddaboutit!

There is nothing like H&H Bagels in New York! Had my first bagel in Manhattan and I haven't found one to compete with it yet.

SomethingSparkly, Vancouver, WA 05/2/2007I've been to and eaten bagels in Toronto, Chicago and even in Jerusalem and I must say that there is no bagel comparable to a New York bagel. In my opinion the best New York bagel is at Bagel Hole. It's located on the corner of Ave. J and East 15 St.

bjakeknobe, St Louis 18/12/2005It's not a true New York experience if you don't try a New York bagel. I recommend trying the bagels in Astoria, Queens for the authentic NY bagel experience. Tell them to take it easy on the cream cheese though, too much can clog the arteries! Definitely try the Jewish delis!

However the one's on New York street are a bit of a disappointment, certainly the one I bought tasted disappointingly like Dairylee to me. The hot dogs from the street vendors are however another matter! Loads of mustard and ketchup - delicious.
