Barefoot skiing is, as the name implies, water skiing without the use of skis. Barefooting is the ideal sport for speed freaks as it requires the skier to travel far faster than in conventional water skiing. Take care though, because if you fall at the speeds you’ll definitely know about it. If you’re new to the sport than we highly recommend you invest in a decent pair of padded shorts!
To make things a bit easier on themselves beginner barefooters use a boom rather than a rope, so that the skier is skiing alongside the tow boat rather than behind it. This has the advantage of making it easier for those in the boat to communicate with and to coach the person barefooting.
Barefoot waterskiing has been around since the 1950s and is now an international sport with a world championships held every two years. If you fancy giving it a go, Australia is the place to be with plenty of clubs and competitions to get involved with.
