Barra Lodge is set in one of the most picturesque areas in Mozambique, surrounded by pristine beaches and the amazingly clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Situated 485km north of bustling Maputo, it’s a bit of a schlep to get there, over roads only recently made suitable for everyday vehicles, but it’s worth it – the place is an oasis of tranquility, secluded and unspoiled. The accommodation is basic but comfortable – a series of en-suite casitas made of thatch and reeds, but the views are something else. Divers too, will be in there element her. The lodge has a fully equipped PADI dive centre, with all the necessary facilities including a training pool, and there are numerous reefs to explore, all teeming with sea life. The recent troubles in Mozambique can overshadow the fact that’s it’s a country of abundant natural beauty - but a visit to Barra Lodge will reveal the country at its very best.
