On so many levels, Beijing is a fascinating place. A city unlike any other. Even below ground. For beneath the busy streets lies a network of tunnels, built during a period of Sino-Soviet tension as a shelter in case of enemy air raids. As such the network of tunnels included everything the population might need to continue their normal lives underground; they even incorporated hairdressers and grocery stores into the sprawling network of passages. Today it’s possible to take a fairly cursory tour of this bizarre underground landscape; the tunnels supposedly spread out under the entirety of the city, though you can only officially explore what amounts to a small section of the reputed 32 kilometres. Many chambers and passages are blocked off, so it's a good idea to bring a flashlight so you can peer down unlit corridors and further fuel your imagination.
