I go regularly to Brugge to see friends and to buy chocolates for the family. If you want to find the best selection in the heart of the city - go to Simon Stevinplein - here you will find the Chocolate Line, Dumon and The Old Chocolate House on Mariastraat all within metres of each other - all hand-made and all excellent quality.
Williamtje, London 23/3/2008I would go back to Belgium ONLY for the chocolate!
hazel1050, New York 28/1/2008If you're in Brussells then you really should visit the chocolatiers around Place Du Grand Sablon, particularly Pierre Marcolini - their chocolates are out of this world.
Howard Phillis, London 06/9/2007Simply the best! You can chose between several brands, and even the cheapest chocolate was amazing - it gives you this orgasmic feeling! Anything with chocolate: waffles, milk, ice cream - you have to try it to believe it!
Bockey, Belgrade 26/2/2007Chocolate in Belgium - delicious! The smallest and more traditional have a better taste. Dumon chocolate in Bruges are the best in my opinion.
Alejandro & Haydée, Mexico 19/9/2006I visited Belgium on my vacation and I can say that it’s a wonderful and beautiful place. You can visit a museum, go to old castles, go shopping and, of course, enjoy a delicious chocolates!
SONIA E, México D. F. 25/6/2006I used to work at a chocolate shop and I have tried every type of chocolate there is, and NOTHING beats Belgian chocolate. Its reputation speaks for itself.
Melissa79, london 04/11/2005Undoubtely, Belgian chocolate is the best of the world. It makes me proud of being Belgian.
stephanie wauthion, mons belgica 01/11/2005I was living in Zedelgem, a small town near Brugges during February this year. Every weekend I would go to Brugges, walk around the streets and try those amazing chocolates. No comparison people, they are the best in the world.
nagesh, Bangalore 04/6/2005Belgian or bust. There is just really no comparison for it. (Sorry Cadburys). It’s such a sensual taste. I have a friend who gave me a box, warning me to eat it slowly. I confess I took no heed to his advice and chewed greedily on the first piece (I love my chocolates) and the explosion of the richness of the chocolate was just unbelievable. Lest I sound corny, it really is better than sex. It is seriously THAT good.
Michael, Singapore 06/5/2005Good beer, good waffles (wafels or gaufres), and good chocolate are great Belgian experiences. For the last reviewer, the reason you probably didn't really enjoy Belgium and thought it was depressing is that you went to Arlon! I've always found the northern, Flemish-speaking region more friendly and, of course, the chocolate, waffles, and beer are better there too!
Michael, Funabashi, Japan 08/1/2005I went to Bruges last autumn. It has a lot of little companies selling you very high quality chocolate. I bought a few for me and some for my friends in Mexico. Be sure to go there on your next trip to Belgium.
betort, San Nicolas 31/7/2004I lived in Belgium for three months during my gap year, in the Walonese (French speaking part) and to be honest it was fairly depressing. Arlon was a fairly drab place, lots of unemployment, no decent clubs, but even the smallest backward village, has a cafe serving great beer, and a chocolatier.
They really know chocolate, using a very high percentage of the finest cocoa and no preservatives. A few years ago the Belgians decided that only chocolate with a percentage of cocoa over 70%, is actually proper chocolate - everything else would simply be known as "chocolate flavoured". Suffice to say they couldn't get it through the European Parliament, but in a way I wish they had. Don't under-estimate the difference between good chocolate and something like Cadburys - it's like the difference between a shandy and a bottle of Absinth, and similarly intoxicating. Recently, some Americans were staying with me, and as a 'gift' they brought some Hershey bars with them. I afraid to say I had to spit it out, and I realised that maybe the Belgians had a point!
