It is said to be the most beautiful town in Italy, which most people will concede is no mean feat. Perched on a peninsula with the waters of Lake Como unfolding on either side this place boasts the kind of views that justify the usually trite tag ‘heart-stopping.’ Pastel coloured, sun-warmed houses clustered by the water’s edge, cypress groves and winding cobbled streets – it couldn’t be more perfect if it tried. No wonder that so many discerning Italians (not to mention the odd Hollywood star) have summer houses in the area.
Bellagio itself is a small place, easy to explore on foot. Sip a Campari in a lake-side bar, take a boat out on the water, then watch the sun set as you enjoy a long leisurely dinner. If you have a spare afternoon, take the time to investigate Bellagio's most splendid villas: the Villa Serbelloni and the Villa Melzi, the latter’s magnificent gardens are particularly worth seeing. Bellagio is accessible by road from the lakeside towns of Como and Lecco, or by ferry from Menaggio and Varenna, but take note, this place casts a spell on you – you’ll find it hard to leave.
