As Turin gradually emerges from under the blanket of Fiat domination, the city’s other industries are finally being given the credit they deserve, and no more so than handmade chocolate.
The local torinese are known throughout Italy for their penchant for sweet, chocolatey drinks and the ‘bicerin’ is the archetypal afternoon pick-me-up.
A curious blend of warm espresso, hot chocolate and cream, bicerin (with the accent on the ‘in’) come served in a small glass to reveal the stratified layers of liquid inside. Depending on where you go, the mixture can be so thick that a spoon will stand bolt upright in the glass.
For a classic introduction to the drink, head to the eponymous bar Al Bicerin, tucked away in a tiny piazza in the historic centre, ensconce yourself at a tiny table with a friend and watch the hours slip by.
