Bioluminescent Bay in Puerto Rico

useful links

Official Site (biobay.com)

It sounds like something out of an implausible sci-fi flick and looks even less believable when you witness it with your own eyes. But Bioluminescent Bay, on the island of Vieques – itself lying off the east coast of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean – is very real indeed. And it’s waiting for you to come and share its once-in-a-lifetime experience. The attractions of the bay are simple. When the micro-organisms that inhabit the waters in their billions are agitated, they emit an ethereal bluey-green light that is so strong you read a book by it at night-time. And since there are thought to be over 700,000 of these half-plant, half-animal specimens – bioluminescent dinoflagellates to their mates – per gallon of water, that’s a lot of light. The effect is magical, and all the more so for being completely natural. You can kayak on the waters and have your picture taken surrounded by what looks like a giant blue halo, or – if you want to get really close – you can even go for a swim. Taking a dip will never feel the same again.

Reviews of Bioluminescent Bay

Imagine swimming in bathtub-warm sea water under a full moon, and every stoke you make with your hand through the water leaves glowing blue light streaks in its wake. Disney World has nothing on the bio bay. But if you visit - PLEASE protect the bay and don't use lotions, bug spray, etc, which will kill the fragile organisms.

My score:

It's by far the most surreal experience I've had. It should be considered a natural wonder of the world.
