It might only be for espresso and a pastry, but no breakfast in Vienna tastes better than one in the legendary Cafe Central, the most famous coffeehouse in a city famous for them. Opened in 1860 in a high-vaulted former bank building, its wood tables, tiled floors, street front windows and golden glow have attracted intellectuals, artists, writers and revolutionaries for nigh on 150 years, among them Goethe, Mahler, Beethoven, Trotsky, and Lenin. The coffee remains the best in town, the pastries are baked on the premises and the setting, despite recent renovations, remains as classical as it ever was.
