Bridge Day – no, don’t switch off, we’re not talking retiring to the drawing room with a small tipple and a deck of cards. This the largest extreme sports event in the world, held at the New River Gorge Bridge, West Virginia. The third Saturday in October is the only day of the year that it is legal to jump the 876 feet to the water of the New River below – that’s a very long 8.8 seconds in case you were wondering. Unfortunately, or otherwise, you can’t just turn up on the day with a parachute and soak up the applause of 20,000 spectators. For the buzz of a lifetime but you will need at least 50 skydiving or BASE jumps under your belt and a lot of paperwork. But the less foolhardy can still join in as part of the craziness or alternatively just to admire the beautiful autumn scenery that the festival was originally designed to celebrate.

Reviews of Bridge Day
This past year was my second Bridge Day trip, and it was a blast as usual. I would highly reccomend taking a mountain bike; you can ride to the bottom of the gorge to hang out with the rappellers and BASE jumpers. You can also use it for the mile-plus commute from the car to the bridge and save the cost of a shuttle. Bike checks were available at the bridge head for free.
