A visit to Devon’s Burgh Island Hotel is akin to a trip back in time. Situated on a private tidal island, the hotel is housed in a gorgeous art deco building. Built in 1929, it quickly became a favourite haunt of Agatha Christie, Noel Coward and Josephine Baker amongst others and has been carefully restored to recapture the glamour of that era. Jazz age mementoes are everywhere you look and guest rooms exude 1930s charm, though of course they also boast all the requisite 21st century touches: bespoke furnishings, crisp linens and REN toiletries in the elegant bathrooms. The restaurant serves locally sourced and seasonal food and a spa room offers guests relaxing massages. On weekends live music is provided by the stylish house band and visitors are encouraged to dress up and take to the dance floor. So slip into your evening gown and pearls and sip a cocktail on the sun terrace or take tea in the lounge and feel the modern world float away.
