The countryside of compact Latvia is surprisingly rich: scenic wooded valleys, ruined castles and atmospheric villages. The Gauja River Valley near Sigulda is particularly breath-taking - both rugged and majestic. The deepest river valley in Latvia, with banks some 90 metres high in places, this area of unspolied natural beauty is best viewed from the above. Those with a head for heights should hop on the cable car which soars over the river (be sure to bring your camera, with views like this you're going to need it). This also provides access to some great local walking trails, through the ruins of Krimulda Castle, and the region's numerous caves.
