Camel Trail Articles, by Mark Moxon (moxon.net)

The world's largest desert extends from Africa's Atlantic Ocean coast in the west to the Red Sea in the east and engulfs great swathes of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Mali, Niger, Chad, and the Sudan. It is 5,200 miles long and covers 3,500,000 square miles. But so what? We're going in! Fly out to Marrakech from where your local Berber guides will take you on a trek into the great unknown.

From the Saghro Valley in the Atlas Mountains, where the rock peaks look like the buttes of Arizona's Monument Valley, you take a Jeep past oases and Kasbahs to the gateway Sahara town of Zagora. From there you pick up a camel train for a three-day ride into the vastness of the Sahara.

Sharing this awesome experience with strangers, you sleep in tents, eat Berber meals, and gaze in wonder at the pink dunes around Oulad Driss. Before returning, visit the great Ait Benhaddou Kasbahs - as seen in the film Gladiator. Easy, really.

Reviews of Camel Trail Through The Sahara

This was an amazing experience. We managed to ride into the desert at sunset when Venus was visible, twinkling in the sky. Then lying looking up at the thousands of stars (incl. shooting!) before the moon rose was unbelievable. The trip through the mountains provided amazing contrasts between the lush green valley and the rocky hills. Then it got gradually more and more dusty.

Riding the camels-make sure you pick a one with a comfy blanket.

If you are in Marrakech or Morocco this is unmissable!

The Moroccan Sahara is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Be sure to be there at dawn, when the sun makes the sand dunes pink and orange. I recommend staying out under the start for a while as well. One quick tip: if you bring a camera, hold onto it! Its a long way down from the top of a camel!
