Comic books fans have something of a geeky reputation (think of Comic Book Guy in the Simpsons if further proof were needed), but there has been increasing crossover into the mainstream of late. These days you can’t move for summer blockbusters that have their roots in comics. And it’s not just Marvel and DC that are getting the love but the altogether darker and more intriguing work of Alan Moore and Frank Miller.
Of course the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco has been celebrating this misunderstood medium for years. This unique institution is the only museum in the United States dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of cartoon art in all its forms.
The permanent collection encompasses some 6,000 original pieces in its permanent collection, featuring everything from traditional animation cells and historical baseball cartoons to underground and edgy contemporary pieces. It’s structured like a traditional gallery space, fairly compact and pleasant to stroll around. The bookstore, Photo Graphix – formally the Friend's of Photography bookstore – is predictably excellent, packed with enough goodies to keep even Comic Book Guy happy.
