Located closer to the French Normandy coast, than to the UK, these five British islands make a quaint and tranquil getaway from the mainland.
Jersey is the largest of the bunch with decent beaches and a buzzing capital in St Helier. It has a surprisingly glam vibe, with yachts in the harbour, and swish cars parked outside equally swish restaurants. St Aubin on the southwest is also worth visiting and the island offers plenty of good opportunities for walking and cycling.
Guernsey has a very different character, more laid back, with pretty bays and the picturesque St Peter Port. Those with an interest in things literary should visit Hauteville House, the distinctive and attractive home where Victor Hugo was exiled from France in 1851. Alderney is probably the most peaceful of the lot, with some wonderful shoreline walks. And, unlike the mainland, the islands are blessed with a mild climate for most of the year.
