Laugher is a wonderful thing. And by that rationale a night at the Comedy Store in central London is a very wonderful thing indeed. This iconic London comedy club started life above a strip club in Soho in 1979. The proprietor Don Ward wanted to create a US style comedy club in London – and he succeeded. Acts were introduced by an MC who, going by how the audience were responding, would use a gong to let the comedians know when it was time for them to step aside and make room for the next act.
Now housed in slightly more salubrious premises just behind Leicester Square, the gong lives on in King Gong - the new talent night held on the last Monday of the month. You’ll also want to check out the Comedy Store Players, the famous improv troupe whose members include big name comedians such as Paul Merton and Josie Lawrence – they play twice weekly – and don’t miss The Cutting Edge, their excellent topical comedy night held on Thursdays.
As well as these regular events, the venue hosts the Best in Stand-Up on the weekends, showcasing the biggest names on the UK comedy scene. A stint at the Store is considered a high-point in any comedian’s career, and the line-up invariably reflects that fact.
