Twenty gorges spread over an area of 25 000sq mile in north-west Mexico, the Sierra Tarahumara, better known as the Copper Canyon, is four times larger than the Grand Canyon. It would be spectacular if there wasn't a train running through it, but sure enough there is: two leave each day on the 13-hour trip between Los Mochis and Chihuahua.

One of the greatest train journeys in the world, the best route is westward from Los Mochis, when you get the finest views of the canyons in the day. Go for a first class train with restaurant and bar, since you may need a margarita to calm your nerves as you climb through coastal plain, pine forests, desert and steep-sided gorges until reaching high into the sheer cliff-tops of the canyons. Never less than awe-inspiring, this is a once-in-a-liftetime adventure.

Reviews of Copper Canyon Train Ride

I agree that this is an amazing train trip! I just wanted to post a word of wisdom to people considering independent travel through the canyon. It is quite possible here. However, be careful of companies that sell train tickets telling you that there are no tickets available for the day(s) you request, and then try to slot you into one of their packages. This is a common scam. Remember you can buy train tickets directly over the phone (they speak English) at the ticket office in Los Mocjis. So don't give up when you are told you have to do it through a package!
