You don’t have to be rich to holiday on the Costa Smeralda, but, as they say, it helps. This scenic stretch of the Sardinian coast was turned into a luxury destination for the well-heeled traveller in the 1960s. The development of the area, by a group of international investors, was led by the Aga Khan and the results have been popular with yacht owning types ever since.
The name means Emerald Coast and it’s easy to guess why. The waters are the most ridiculously rich blue-green colour, the perfect backdrop for the rugged but beautiful landscape. Great care has been taken to protect this landscape and ensure that tourism does not impact on its beauty. The main town in the region is Porto Cervo, known as the 'invisible city' for the way its architecture blends so harmoniously with its surroundings. Hotels in the region tend, unsurprisingly, towards five star exclusivity. The best of the beaches are Liscia Ruia, Cappriccioli and Romazzino. Hire a car and explore at your own pace – the hotels may be expensive but the views are free.
