If you and your companions possess fertile imaginations, Culloden Moor is the place to be. It was here on April 16, 1746 that one of the bloodiest battles in British history took place as Government troops slaughtered the Jacobites, led by Bonnie Prince Charlie. Locals say that on the anniversary of the battle ghostly soldiers appear on what is now an unassuming field containing a few flags and stones; some claim you can still hear the violent sounds of battle.

But you don't need to believe in the supernatural to feel spooked by the eerie calm that surrounds this site in Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, and you can even touch the history by visiting the Leanach cottage, which survived the fighting. Culloden Moor marked the end of a battle for succession for the throne that lasted 60 years. The memories of a trip here can last a lifetime.

Reviews of Culloden Moor

I was born in Glasgow and only returned to Scotland after 45 years in Australia, Of all the places I visited I found the visit to Culloden the most moving! Just to stand where so many died you could almost feel the sadness.

I did visit this site and decided to take a night jaunt from my place of lodging. It was an eerie sight, considering what had happened there in the 1700s. Along the way, I actually saw what appeared to be a person with a rucksack perched on an embankment above the walking trail I was on. I quickly began whistling to scare away anything that might be lurking in Culloden's fields, including my own fears.

Culloden Moor is probably one of top three historical sites in Scotland, tracing the bloody end of Bonnie Prince Charlie's highland army. The guided tour is excellent and explains how poorly prepared the Scots were for the battle, right down to having the wrong sized cannon balls for their cannons! For a good Scottish victory, try Bannockburn!
