The Dutch are the world’s largest exporters of dairy products and reputedly consume around 15kilos of cheese per person annually, perhaps explaining why many grow to be so tall!
A veritable Mecca of cheese then, this is a country with a long history of cheese making and it’s no surprise to find such a vast selection of local varieties on offer in Amsterdam’s numerous cheese shops. The best of these is the wonderful De Kaaskamer; Gouda and Edam are the big names on the shelves here, but there are also cheeses with added spices or herbs, not to mention the different flavors that range from young to mature, full-fat or reduced-fat, salty or low salt and so on. Indeed, the list is endless, so if it is all too much to get your head around, just ask to taste a few random slices and see where your taste buds lead you.
