Budapest has one of the most exciting nightlife scenes in Europe. Not only does the city boast inumerable atmospheric cafes, and a fabulous array of restaurants serving both traditional Hungarian and international cuisine, but a new phenomenon has sprung up over the last few years, unique to the Hungarian capital. A romkocsma (literally translated as a ‘ruin-pub’) is a drinking establishment set up in any historical and opulent yet derelict space that the city as to offer, usually in the courtyards of old houses. Some are simple set-ups with little more than candles, a few chairs and a bar, others are more elaborate, featuring live music, dance floors and sometimes even film screenings.
Transient in nature, they can be hard to be find, and often disappear at the end of the summer never to return, yet they are always being replaced by equally exciting venues as new spaces are scouted out. Give your stay in Budapest a twist by asking in-the-know locals to direct you to the best of these ruin-pubs – and spend your evening supping beer in a grand and evocative setting like no other.
