Ekaterinburg, the historical and economic center of the Urals, is a large industrial city located on the border between Europe and Asia. The actual continental boundary lies about 40 km west of the city - a simple gray stone obelisk, not particularly stunning in stature or particularly old, but undoubtedly important as a symbol.
As with the meridian at Greenwich, John O' Groats in Scotland, and the Equator, people flock here primarily for the photo opportunities, the "yes, I've been there" factor, but hopefully they leave thinking a little more deeply about the historically complex relationship between West and East.
