If your idea of a music festival involves waist-deep mud and moshing to My Chemical Romance, this won’t be for you. If on the other hand your spirit is moved by the thought of wafting around in an evening dress, champagne flute in hand, while listening to some of the best opera that the UK has to offer, then add a visit to Glyndebourne to your list of must-do cultural events for the summer.
Glyndebourne is a country house near Lewes, in East Sussex.
Under the supervision of the Christie family, an opera festival has taken place in the lavish grounds since 1934. Glyndebourne productions are world class, the London Philharmonic is the festival’s principal orchestra and recordings from past stagings are treasured by opera buffs. Its popularity is such that tickets can be hard to come by, though the introduction of online booking has made it a little more accessible. Sophisticated, elegant and utterly enchanting, if you’re an opera fan a visit isn’t a luxury it’s a necessity.
