It will come as a shock to few people, but this recently opened restaurant, owned by Dolce and Gabbana, is not exactly a haven of understatement and minimalism. In fact this new Milan hangout is a temple to all things that shimmer and shine. The clue’s in the name. There isn’t a surface that doesn’t drip with gilt. The bathrooms overflow with golden bamboo and even the labels on the water-bottles can be described as bling. The concept of excess isn’t really an issue.
The restaurant is divided into two parts: downstairs is a bar and a bistro area, whereas upstairs there is a more formal restaurant, though this is open for dinner only. And the food? Well it’s simple but satisfying Italian fare, but the food isn’t really the point, we suspect. The winelist is however pretty top-notch. Gold has already proved a hit with the city’s fashionistas and the front row fashion-week mavens. If that sounds like your type of crowd, then snag yourself a table next time you’re in Milan.
