Mark Twain described golf as "a good walk spoiled". Golf Cross is a different matter entirely. The atmosphere is more light-hearted, there is no dress code, and the aim is to hit an oval-shaped ball into a triangular net. As a leisurely and cheap day out with three friends on one of the picturesque courses in New Zealand, it takes some beating. Golf Cross was dreamed up in 1989 by Burton Silver, a Kiwi inventor, writer and cartoonist, but it wasn't until 2001 that the game was officially launched. You use the same set of clubs as in golf, minus the putters. The ball can be positioned in five different ways on the rubber tee, while the net can be moved to face in your direction - as long as you have first located the "yard", the Golf Cross equivalent of the green. It's simple, fun and very sociable. And you might even improve your golf.

Reviews of Golf Cross in New Zealand

Great fun, and way more strategic than golf which makes it a real mental challenge too. Played at Braemar Station on the shores of Lake Pukaki. Accomodation in the shearers' quarters is very comfortable and surrounded by snow-capped peaks.
