The Gramercy Park Hotel is something of a legend. Popular with celebrities and civilians alike for its slightly shabby charm, it was a genuine New York institution and, under the ownership of the Weissberg family, it had become the hotel of choice for generations of artists, writers and musicians. The Kennedys often stayed there, Babe Ruth was a regular in the bar and Humphrey Bogart got married in the lobby. However after the onsite suicide of a member of the Weissberg clan, change was inevitable and the hotel has recently received a much talked about 21st century makeover from Ian Schrager.
The results are striking, with the dramatic and rather Gothic redesign nodding to the hotel’s bohemian past without compromising on contemporary style and comfort. The in-room hotplates and somewhat threadbare carpets are gone, replaced with luxury fittings of the highest standards. Daring use of colour – lots of deep reds and greens with splashes of tiffany box blue – and lavish velvet curtains add to the opulent atmosphere.
The candle-lit Rose Bar with custom-designed furniture by Julian Schnabel is a destination in its own right. This is a hotel you won’t forget in a hurry.
