Grauman’s Chinese Theatre is probably the most famous cinema in the world, and a Hollywood icon to boot. It’s so well known that it has been said that “to visit Los Angeles and not see the Chinese is like visiting China and not seeing the Great Wall.” And it is indeed a fabulous building, opulent and over the top. Steeped in Hollywood lore, it has played host to numerous premieres and parties over the years, and even to two Academy Awards ceremonies. The entrance is framed by two gigantic red columns topped by wrought iron masks, and between these columns sits a 30-foot high carved dragon. The two giant Heaven Dogs that guard the main door were brought over from China. And though it’s tempting just to look up, to gawp at the lavish exterior, don’t forget to look down. The theatre’s forecourt is famously covered with signatures and handprints, almost 200 in total, marks made in wet cement by the film industry’s biggest stars.
