If you like jazz you should, no, make that must, give this place a visit if you're in Chicago. Believed to be the oldest continuously run jazz club in the US, it is something of a place of pilgrimage for fans of smooth, smoky sounds. Throughout its history, The Green Mill Cocktail Lounge has played host to a number of famous jazzsters, down the years boasting such headliners as Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor and Sophie Tucker. The play list remains impressive, and the Mill's reputation remains. Don't come here for a natter with friends, as too much mid-set chat is likely to draw glares from those there for the music (i.e. most of the crowd). Do come here for unrivalled atmosphere and, for a uniquely Chicago experience, be sure to check out the Poetry Slam on Sunday nights.
