London’s most glamorous restaurant? Hakkasan has to be a contender. With a tucked-away entrance down a grubby, nondescript side-street, you might be sceptical at first. But one you go through those doors and descend into the basement below, any concerns will be quickly allayed. The creation of Alan Yau (the man behind the Wagamama chain), this is a stunning place, with dark, exotic decor, all blacks and blues. Carefully placed screens create an air of privacy and flickering candles enhance the mood; the atmosphere is studiedly hip, though not self-consciously so.
The food takes Chinese cookery to new heights for London (boasting the first Michelin Star ever awarded to a Chinese restaurant), and the lunch time dim sum are particularly spectacular. Also, and unusually for a Chinese restaurant, Hakkasan excels at desserts – as even the smallest taste of their Criollo chocolate lemon mousse will confirm.
The restaurant’s Ling Ling bar is also quite something, equally stylish, with an exciting cocktail list featuring many unusual orient-inspired creations. Try the Plum Sour (Chinese plum brandy, Chivas Regal and sours), a cocktail almost as cool as your surroundings.
