An early morning wake-up call and a trip to the infamous Sunday Fischmarkt is an unmissable experience when visiting Hamburg, no matter what the season. Chances are it is going to be grey and windy at dawn, but the thought of a smoked herring fillet on white bread washed down by a cold beer seems to be enough to persuade most to make the effort each week. There are even those who drop in after a night out to finish off their evening, although this is not advised for those with delicate stomachs or regular sleep patterns. Despite being officially labeled a fish market, there are all manner of things on sale here, from animals and pets, to fruit, coffee and even clothing. Somehow though, the sight of such vast quantities of recently caught fresh fish still draws the biggest crowd, come rain or shine.
