Bajans regard Harrison’s Cave as one of the seven wonders of Barbados, and it is easy to see why. The series of caves were formed by the underground rivers that have cut through the limestone heart of the island over the millennia, and what better way to explore them than on an electric tram which transports you from the outside world into a magical land of weird and wonderful stone formations. The tram stops twice to allow you to walk around and take photos of the atmospherically illuminated stalagmites and stalactites, many of which have joined to form pillars, but the crowning glory of this adventure into the unknown is the stroll along the spectacular waterfall that greets you at the lowest point of the ride.
There has been redevelopment work going in on Harrison’s Cave of late. Though it was open to the public during the 2007 Cricket World Cup, it has been closed for some periods since 2006. However this work should all be completed in late 2007, so you will be able sample its many subterranean delights.
