For years the Moroccan port of Casablanca was best known for the film starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. But ever since 1993, there has been another reason to visit this atmospheric old town. That year, work on the world’s second-biggest mosque was completed to celebrate the 60th birthday of King Hassan II, and the construction, perched grandly on a promontory sticking out into the Atlantic, remains a must-see for visitors to this North African nation. At 210m, its minaret is the tallest in the world and can be seen for miles around. Inside, there is room for 25,000 worshippers, while the courtyard is big enough to host a further 80,000. And the good news for tourists is that this is the only mosque in Morocco which is open to non-Muslims.
Not all Moroccans were happy at the vast expenditure that went into the mosque, but there is little doubt that the end product is breathtakingly grand – not just from the outside, but from the inside too, where the mosaics and the marble form a visual treat that will stay with you forever.

Reviews of Hassan II Mosque
We visited Morocco and toured the Hassan II Mosque in September 2006. It is a beautiful building both inside and out. Worth taking the time to visit.
