When one thinks of culinary big-hitters the names that spring to mind are mostly male: Gordon Ramsey, Heston Blumenthal, Joel Robuchon. And nowhere is this more the case than France, where traditionalism reigns supreme when it comes to matters of a gastronomic nature. So let’s give thanks for Helene Darroze, a woman who has taken on the ultra-competitive Paris restaurant scene and won. Her eponymous Left Bank restaurant is one of the finest in a city that knows a thing or two about fine dining. Darroze specialises in the flavours of southwest France, from the lands around Albi and Toulouse. The restaurant is chicly styled and the cooking flawless. Downstairs there’s a lively bistro with an open kitchen, but you’ll want to head to the upstairs dining room to really see what this place is capable of. Ingredients are impeccably sourced (foie gras and poultry from the Landes, the beef from Chalosse), making any meal here a real event.
