Right up there with Ascot and Wimbledon on the English summer social diary is the Henley Royal Regatta, a rowing event that takes place in the pretty Thames town of Henley over five days during the first weekend of July. First held in 1839, it became known as the Henley Royal Regatta in 1851 when Prince Albert became the patron, and from relatively humble beginnings now attracts a stellar array of royalty, socialites and celebrities. Expect plenty of Pimms and plumy British accents. Races are held over 1 mile on the river, with crowds gathering on the banks to hooray and holler, the main event being Saturday's Eights Grand Challenge Cup. The best vantage points for mere civilians are on the Berkshire side of the Thames, while the Buckinghamshire side is given over to the big-spending corporate types. The 2007 event is on July 4th-8th.
