Hogmanay celebrations date back to the 16th century when the canny Scots, irked by the Kirk's decision to ban Christmas, used it as a way of having a party. No wonder they are so darn good at it. Arrive in Edinburgh on the 29th of December and get in the mood with the torchlight procession which leaves from Parliament square past St Giles's Cathedral all the way up to Calton Hill where an enormous bonfire lights up the city.

Having seen your grand playground spread out before you, you may now prepare for the 31st. And, yes sir, the Scots can boogie. Join the huge party which writhes and stumbles through Princes Street, George Street and the Royal Mile. Be part of the merry throng, jig to a piper, dance a ceilidh, watch the fireworks explode over the beautiful old castle. Have a wee dram and click glasses with a pal.

Reviews of Hogmanay

The 2004 celebration was great, and the people were incredibly friendly and wonderful! The party was great and the drinks flowed all night.

An awesome night!

1998 was the best one ever, mainly becuse it was the year I went. My wife Marie and I went up from Newcastle and we had a brilliant time. The locals were firendly and the street atmosphere as it neared midnight was stunning.

Och aye, what a brilliant knee-up the Scots put on. I went up to Edinburgh in 2002 and had an awesome time, plenty of drinking, dancing and singing! Definitely a must for a least once in your lifetime.
