The west coast of New Zealand’s South Island has always enjoyed a reputation for being just a wee bit different, as they say in that part of the world. Life is relaxed, uncomplicated and very outdoors, and the Hokitika Wild Food Festival is the perfect expression of all three qualities. It started life in 1990 as part of the town’s 125th-birthday celebrations and has since become one of New Zealand’s most original experiences. If you’ve ever fancied dabbling in gourmet bushtucker, now’s your chance: from snails cooked in white wine and gumboot milkshakes to spagnum moss candy floss, the festival takes the raw materials of nature and turns them into a weird and wonderful gastronomical treat. But the food is just a part of it. The Kokatahi band, formed in 1910, provides a rhythmic backdrop, and there are activities for people of all ages. And if you feel like taking time out at the end of the day, the local beach is the perfect place to watch the sun set. Careful, though: you might never want to leave.
