Hamburg is reputed to be one of the richest cities in Europe and it doesn’t take a genius to work out that a large chunk of that wealth comes from the media conglomerates lining the city’s elegant waterways.

No surprise then to find one of Germany’s top haute cuisine restaurants located in the grand and elegant waterfront Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Step inside the hotel’s Haerlin Restaurant to find yourself in a refined, rather baronial dining room that smacks of Hanseatic prosperity and sophistication. Chef Christopher Ruffer’s cooking has already been awarded a Michelin star and with a menu that focuses predominantly on locally sourced fish (think of those rivers nearby) and hard-to-find seasonal ingredients, it’s easy to see why the media moguls can’t keep away from the place.
