This one-time fishing village is now something of a traveller hotspot. It’s easy to see why. The Jericoacoara beach is reputedly one of the most stunning in Brazil. Isolated until relatively recently, it’s a place of extraordinary beauty, where thanks to an Environmental Protection Order, the pace of life is still fairly tranquil and laid-back. The lack of decent roads and swish accommodation, keeps the tourist hordes away, and those who do make the journey come for the relaxed vibe and the great waves. Jericoacoara also happens to be one of the best places to windsurf in the CearÁ region - due to the trade winds that arrive from Africa, the waters here are perfect for the sport. As a result of its protected status, accommodation options are limited to a scattering of small lodges and fishermen’s houses, and of course you can always camp. The long stretches of white sand are perfect for horse-riding or dune-buggying, but most people are content to lounge by the sea and let their troubles melt away under the Brazilian sun.
