While the innovative likes of The Fat Duck and El Bulli have their place in the scheme of things, sometimes a more traditional approach is required to produce a truly memorable dining experience. One of the best restaurants in London, and indeed in Europe, Le Gavroche is unarguably traditional, serving impeccable French cuisine, but it’s neither stuffy or elitist. Opened by the legendary Roux brothers in the 1960s the restaurant soon gained a reputation for its superb cooking, a reputation it still holds today. Michel Roux Jnr, son of Albert Roux, now runs the kitchen and he has clearly learnt well from his esteemed father. The food is rich and sublime. Typical dishes include Hot Fois Gras with Duck flavoured with Cinnamonm, and Bitter Chocolate and Praline Indulgence. The dining room is grand, if a little severe, and a formal dress code is observed, but donning a jacket seems par for the course when dealing with cooking of such superb standards. This is food that demands much respect.
