Sometimes perfection isn’t everything. The undoubted highlight of the Piazza dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles) in Pisa, isn’t the cathedral or the ornate baptistery but the bell tower, which surely ranks as one of the most famous sights in Italy.

A dazzling marble construction, its seven bells used to ring out all over Pisa. But not any more, as there are real fears that the vibrations will cause the, already unstable, tower to collapse. As it is, it already teeters precariously to the side, like a drunkard on his final fall into the gutter. Construction started in 1173, on the shifting sands of a former estuary, and by the time the architect had overseen three stories, the tilt was already evident. The tower has continued to incline further, increasing at the rate of 1mm a year, despite attempts by experts to restore it to the perpendicular (most recently in Black September 1995). Modern engineers have restored some stability to the structure, and visitors are once more allowed to enter, but there’s a sense they’re fighting a battle that may one day be lost.

Reviews of Leaning Tower of Pisa

I saw the tower last summer as I backpacked through Europe. It's a cool sight but one of those things you see, take a picture of and be on your way. Worth the stop though, as long as you avoid the tourists.

Pisa is a bit of a tourist hell-hole to be honest, but if you can face the crowds the tower is still an amazing site. Just avoid the restaurants around it though.

I was in two mind about visiting this - it's one of those things you're 'supposed' to see while in Italy but I'm glad I went. There were a lot of tourists but the whole square, not just the tower, was worth seeing and Pisa's an agreeable place to spend a couple of nights.

It's an obvious one, but still worth seeing. The piazza was crammed with people doing their holding-up-the-tower poses for camera, but it was still an amazing thing to see, despite the crowds.
