This is gruesome but guiltily magnetic. The masses queue at the north side of Red Square for entry to Lenin's mausoleum, where the architect of the 1917 Bolshevik revolution lies shadowed by the ramparts of the Kremlin.

While you're waiting you can admire the onion domes of St Basil's cathedral and imagine the synchronized marching of the grand military parades. When you're inside you can take as lingering a look as you dare at his waxy hands and head - the rest of his body is hidden provoking much speculation about its decomposition. Lenin wanted to be buried properly but his embalmed corpse has lain here since 1924, terrifying and fascinating. Join the millions who've made this macabre pilgrimage - you won't forget it in a hurry.

Reviews of Lenin's Tomb

Yes indeed - the guards are very serious. I put my hand in my pocket to get a handkerchief to wipe my nose and two of the guards came alongside me in case I was about to do something else!

If you visit the tomb it is free of charge but you are not allowed to take a camera (even one in a mobile phone) you will have to leave them safely with someone else who is not going with you.

Learn some Russian Cyrillic letters - after the tomb are the memorials of many interesting and well known past presidents and it is a shame not to know who you are walking past

My score:

I visited Lenin's tomb during February 2004. The visit was fascinating, though a little unnerving. The guards were exceedingly serious - no smiles or small talk. As I walked around the glass case containing Lenin's body, I was not permitted to stop and examine him. The guards indicated I was to keep moving, even if only slowly. As such, my time inside was quite short. Nonetheless, it was an experience that will always stay with me!
