The glorious island of Madeira is famed for its 16th century system of Levadas - irrigation canals that traverse the lush hills and valleys of the island. Alongside the canals are maintenance trails that now form glorious walking paths covering some 1350 miles of the island. Among the best are the Levada of 25 Fontes, with its 25 natural springs cascading into a lake, and the Ribeiro Frio - Lamaceiros - Portela trail through forests of heather along canals brimming with leaping trout. Cliff-side corniches, flower-strewn hills, water-courses lined with lilies and hydrangeas, and dramatic views of the Atlantic below are permanent backdrops. Walks can take five hours or five days, so take company and bring a picnic.
