Three major opera troupes perform traditional “old town” Peking Opera in Taiwan – the Ta Peng, Hai Kuang, and Lu Kuang troupes. You can catch at least one of these troupes most nights in Taipei. With its spectacular martial acrobatics, clanging gongs, thumping drums and ethereal costumes and make-up, classical Chinese Opera can make our western version seem somewhat parochial. Dating back to the Qing dynasty, the style first came to Taiwan in 1949 with the arrival of the Nationalist armed forces, and as a result the three troupes have close ties to the army, air force and navy, frequently made up of military personnel and often performing for them. That’s as militaristic as it gets though and watching the Lu Kuang army troupe perform is a mesmerizing experience.
