What’s that in the sky? Why it’s a giant inflatable Charlie Brown – it must be Thanksgiving! The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with its array of brightly coloured balloons based on popular comic strip characters is a New York tradition. It started in the 1920s when the staff of Macy's (the famous NYC department store), many of whom were second-generation immigrants, decided to celebrate the American holiday of Thanksgiving with a European-style festival, with costumes, floats and music. It was such a success that the store decided to make it an annual event.
The balloons didn’t arrive on the scene until 1927 – with Felix the Cat being the first inflatable animal to float through New York’s streets. The Parade adopted its current route in 1945, with the fun kicking off at the intersection of 77th Street and Central Park West.
If you’re lucky enough to be in the city over Thanksgiving then you won’t be able to resist joining the crowds of New Yorkers watching the Parade and sharing in some of the holiday spirit.
