The saltpans of Makgadikgadi are thought to be the largest in the world. They were once part of a great lake that has been dry for more than two thousand years and now make up one of Botswana’s most fascinating national parks. Makgadikgadi actually consists of two large saltpans, Sowa and Ntwetwe, and a number of smaller pans. Stark and surreal in the heat, these dramatic expanses of white shimmer in the sunlight in an almost disorientating fashion. Few other places on earth have such an otherworldly aura. And when the rain comes, this striking terrain undergoes a dramatic change, filling with water birds and great herds of game. The park is situated roughly halfway between Maun and Nata in northern Botswana. There are two camping options within the park available to visitors, and the best time to visit this area is from late January to April.
